The local settings file is corrupt

Operatingsystem

Windows

Software

7.9 and higher

Error Message

Error image
Invalid byte 2 of 4-byte UTF-8 sequence

Cause

When starting the software client you will receive the above error message and you cannot proceed.
This error occurs if the local file in which the settings are stored is corrupt.

Solution

Under the Windows user folder you will find the settings folder of the software.
  • .obm for Pro/VM Software
  • .acb for PC Software

The config folder is located in the settings folder. If you rename or delete them, the local settings are gone.

e.g. C:\Users\Admin\.obm\config -> C:\Users\Admin\.obm\config2

You can now start the software again, after which you will have to fill in the account information again (Login, Password, Server address).
The software will then download the settings from the backup server and all you have to do is enter your encryption key again.

All settings except the encryption key are stored on the backup server!
Always document the encryption key properly, because if you lose it, you cannot get your data back!
