File size of SystemState.bkf does not appear to be correct

OS

Windows 2003, System State

Software

5.5.x.x

Error Message

File size of "C:\Backup\SystemState\123456789012\SERVER\SystemState.bkf"does not appear to be correct

Cause

Means that the creation of the System State-file, trough NTBackup.exe, has failed.
A .bkf-file of only a few kilobytes is generated, while The System State of Windows 2003 is approx. 500 MB.

Solution

  • Check the Windows event log around the time of the backup for error messages. Usually the System State fails because of problems within the VSS.
If VSS-errors do occur, run the batch file C:\Program Files\Mindtime Pro Backup\bin\RegisterVSS.bat to re-register all VSS dll's and services.
(!) Windows has to be manually rebooted afterwards.
  • It can also be the case that there is another application at the time of the backup using VSS, in that case change the backup time. Only one VSS operation is allowed simultaneously.
  • Try starting a manual backup, if this completes without any problems then access rights are the cause.
    1. Open the software
    2. Go to the backupset settings (cog)
    3. Select the System State set
    4. In the general tab fillout the authentication credentials so the software can access the system state (usually administrator)
  • Start the NTBackup.exe and try a manual System State backup, look for any error messages and send them to support@mindtimebackup.com
